This week we're catching up with Muhammad Ambia founder of Event Squared, a crowd purchasing platform for theatre events.
Muhammad joined the IncuBus London cohort with the determination to make events more affordable by negotiating large discounts through crowd purchasing so whether you want to go alone or as part of a group you can benefit from large discounts for the best seats.
Muhammad gives us his story below:
Tell me a bit about you and your background.
I'm someone that likes a challenge and thrives on improving things. I graduated as an engineer and did some pretty cool stuff from designing a glider to making and racing a one-seater vehicle at Silverstone against other universities from around the world. Afterwards, I worked as an Advertising Executive for one of the biggest sports media providers on the planet. Had the privilege of managing campaigns for major brands, looking after sites like the Premier League and WWE to monetising the highlights sections on major news outlets such as the Independent and New York Times. Yet, I have always aspired to start my own business and decided to use my experiences to challenge myself and develop something special.
Introduce your startup.
Event Squared is the group funding site for events and activities. Like most Londoners I grew up in one of the most diverse cities in the world. There is pretty much an event or activity for everyone going on every day. However, events are expensive and for about 40% of interested non-attendees the price is a major deterrent. I know this personally as I have three sisters and a simple day out can cost a small fortune. To overcome this hurdle, Event Squared uses group purchasing for individuals and groups to go to events together for cheaper.
Why did you decide to launch your own business and to become the part of the London startup scene?
I've wanted to start my own business for a long time. Yet, there are always questions like is the idea good?, is the time right?, How much time and money needs to be invested? Without taking the initial step you will never know what you are capable of. For me I started with small steps, I worked on the Digital Business Academy Courses, went to several networking events and finally joined the IncuBus cohort, but none of this would have been possible if I hadn't taking the initial step. Personally I am risk averse, however there is no better place than the London Start-up scene to get advice and put your ideas into motion.
What are your goals/ what are you looking for with your startup?
I have several goals and milestones, but the primary goal is to use this business as a platform to develop myself whilst doing something that I enjoy. Meeting new people, learning and developing a business and experiencing London with others, can't really ask for more! In terms of long term vision, I would love people to say that they had awesome experiences thanks to Event Squared.
What has been the best and the worst thing which happened to you/startup since you started this journey?
The best thing is actually starting. Like most people I procrastinate a lot and the hardest part is actually going - lets do this. When you start you realise that their are a lot of ups and downs, but there is no better place to get advice and support than from the London start-up community. It has been an awesome experience. In terms of the worst parts, these are the downs. Whether that is a pitch that goes wrong or a promotion that goes pear-shaped. Yet, this is all part of the learning experience and how you develop from this and make the most of the situation will define how successful your business is.
