Getting press is not always easy, especially if you’re a first time entrepreneur. The new Cohort in the IncuBus London incubator programme was of the same opinion. We got in touch with Yoav Farbey co-founder and editor of The Startup Magazine who came down to host a workshop session around PR and approaching the press. Here’s our interview with Yoav, covering his startup journey with The Startup Magazine and his advice for startups looking to get press:
How did you start The Startup Magazine?
I was running my own startup in Bristol and I started a personal website about the things I did as a company founder; how I grew my business and stuff like that. It quite quickly became popular but then I wanted to get other entrepreneurs to share their experiences, too. I wanted it to be a platform for entrepreneurs to share their stories and to learn from each other. That was the first version of The Startup Magazine. As we were really passionate about what we were doing and believed that it was useful for our community we decided to put it together into a full time business.
How does The Startup Magazine help its readers?
We’re providing them with knowledge, but not just from our team. We know the right people to talk about certain areas of the business so we get them in, but instead of promoting that individual we share their knowledge. We don’t want to drop a line about the fact that they run an accountancy firm and suggest the readers to go and speak to them. It’s not about that; it’s about being transparent, so they show their value to our community. We’ve got experts that you can write to if you wanted to. So that’s how we’re serving our regular readers.
What is the most important PR advice that you’d give a startup?
The most important thing is to do your research before and during your approach for press. Before you approach a journalist or a publication make sure that they are the right fit for you and that your potential customers are going to be reading it. You also have to make sure that you’ve done research on the people you’re approaching; otherwise they can be wrong for you too. If you want to charm them you have to spend some time knowing about things that they have done. Tell them that you spent time analyzing why they would be the right person for you, because they will appreciate it.
